Last year around 90,000 cars were stolen in the UK, with a large portion of those cars being shipped by criminals to countries such as Africa, Cyprus, Eastern Europe, and the U.S.
Although car crime according to the government is falling, it’s still a huge problem.
One of the popular times for car criminals to strike is at Christmas. Criminals are not daft, and they know lots of people want to get out of the cold and into the sun, which gives them an easy target if that person decides to leave their car at home while on holiday.
Some Criminals Also Use Social Media
Facebook is not just a great social network to catch up with friends and share news; it has also become an important tool for criminals who want to know who is going on holiday
Criminals will look at the people within their location and find an easy target. If you share your news that you are going away, then you are making yourself that target.
See our blog post on using social media whilst on holiday.
If you are going on holiday, this Christmas then follow our advice :
1. Do not advertise your holiday details on social networks such as Facebook.
2. If you are going to leave your house empty, then make sure you tell a friend or a family member and ask them to check on your house.
3. Ask a neighbour to switch on your downstairs and upstairs light on each day to show activity within your home.
4. Park your car in an Airport Car Parking facility so it is secure.
The last thing you want to do when you come back from holiday is to go home and find your car has been stolen from outside of your home. You also don’t want to find out that your house has been broken into.
