Laser Pen Attacks At Newcastle Airport

Posted on 20th October 2015 at 11:20am

Accident Waiting To Happen At Newcastle Airport Due To Laser Pen Attacks

Laser Pen Attacks at Newcastle AirportThere have been ten laser pen attacks in the first quarter of 2015 at Newcastle Airport.

Unless immediate action is taken, and those responsible receive a custodial sentence, an accident could happen that could cost lives.

For some reason, people find it fun to shine a laser pen into the cockpit directly at the crew flying the plane while it is flying over them, taking off at an airport or landing.

Incidents on the Rise

Pilots flying into and from Newcastle Airport have noticed an increase in the number of incidents with people pointing laser pens at their aircrafts.

The pilots need a high level of concentration at all times, especially when they are preparing to land or take off. If a person shines a laser at a plane, it could risk the safety of the crew and passengers and that is why more needs to be done to catch these people.

Criminal Offence

Shining a laser at a plane is a criminal offence but this does not seem to put people off. With the high number of laser pen attacks, this year more needs to be done to send a clear message at how dangerous these actions can be.

Although the police are doing all they can, it can be hard to catch these people. However, when the police do catch one of the culprits, my suggestion is put them in jail as a warning to others.

Northumbria Police Comments

Northumbria Police has said it will continue to target offenders caught carrying out these activities, but in reality the incidents will continue unless someone is put in prison as an example to others.

Chief Inspector John Heckels said: “Pointing laser pens at aircraft may seem harmless but it has the potential to be incredibly dangerous. It is not an exaggeration to say that this type of behaviour can put lives at risk and those caught in the act will be arrested and put before the courts.”

Tackling the Problem

There are a number of solutions to solve this problem, one would be to send aviation experts around schools to educate teenagers, and another one would be to ban the laser pens.
