Over Eight Hundred Parents In Scunthorpe Fined For Taking Children On Holiday
Each year since the school term holiday ban was brought in, the number of parents being fined around the UK has increased, and Scunthorpe is no different.
In 2014, 16,430 parents in the UK were fined for taking their children out of school, which was an increase to the previous year of 13,128. In 2014, 830 of those parents were from Scunthorpe.
The latest figures show the government school term fine system is not only wrong and causing hardship to thousands of parents; it also shows the fine system isn’t working.
Scunthorpe, which recently has seen an increase in unemployment and is feeling the full effect of the rising cost of living, has seen a huge increase in the number of parents being fined.
In the term time of 2013-2014 650 parents were fined, and that has risen to 830 in the last school year. Opposition to the school term holiday ban has said it shows the ban is not working and needs to be modified.
A parent from Scunthorpe, who did not wished to be named said: “Holidays are increasing in price, a small fine from the government is an inconvenience, but I save over five hundred pounds by taking my children out of school.”
Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin is asking for the government to launch an urgent inquiry into the school holiday ban and the impact it is having.
Legal Battle Won
The government may be forced to scrap the holiday ban and repay the fines issued to parents after a recent victory. Jon Platt, a father who was fined for taking his daughter out of school, was fined was determined to prove the government were wrong.
