Novotel London Excel near London City Airport

Never mind the VIP treatment - there's some serious red-carpet rolling-out going on for families at the Novotel London Excel. Children stay free, eat breakfast free, and have their own play areas - but it's the personalised gift they'll receive on arrival that'll really make the little ones feel like celebrity guests. There's a special kids' menu in the restaurant too - and in fine weather the whole family can enjoy their meal on the terrace, overlooking the Royal Victoria Dock. You can even bring your pets with you - yes, when we say this is a hotel for the whole family, we really mean it.

By car:
Leave the M25 at junction 30 and take the A13 into London - it's the first exit if you're going anticlockwise, and the third exit if you're going clockwise.
Stay on the A13 for about 12 miles, going straight on at all the interchanges.
At the roundabout with the A1011, near Canning Town tube station, take the second exit, staying on the A13. Shortly afterwards, bear left onto Barking Road, which becomes East India Dock Road.
Turn left onto Leamouth Road, then take the second exit at the roundabout onto Lower Lea Crossing. Take the second exit at the next roundabout too, onto Tidal Basin Road. This road will become Western Gateway, and the hotel is at the end of it.
By public transport:
Take the Jubilee line to Canning Town, then the Docklands Light Railway to Custom House. Come out of the station and follow the signs to the Excel Centre. The hotel is opposite the main entrance.

Hotel Facilities

Room Facilities

Neutral decor and crisp white bedding contrast with brightly-coloured furniture and cushions to give the rooms at the Novotel an appealing combination of cheerfulness and elegance. All rooms have a minibar, air conditioning, satellite and cable TV with pay-per-view movies and radio stations, a hairdryer, tea and coffee and a phone with voicemail. Wifi is available in all rooms and costs £3.50 for one hour or £7.99 for 24 hours - or you can buy a 24-hour movies and internet package for £15.50. The bathrooms have a bath and a shower, and even a radio.

Leisure Facilities

The hotel has a gym, a sauna, a steam room and a Turkish bath, all of which are open from 6am to 10pm.

Restaurant Details

Sit out on the waterside terrace in fine weather - or enjoy the impressive views of the Royal Victoria Dock through the huge windows in the light, attractive, air-conditioned Upper Deck Restaurant. We have to say, though, the most impressive view of all's the delicious-sounding menu.
Every single one of the classic British dishes on offer sounds appealing, from roast cod with potato gnocchi, chorizo and roasted peppers to chicken breast stuffed with mozzarella and sunblush tomatoes, accompanied by roasted rosemary potatoes. Just to make choosing all the harder, it's quite an extensive menu - there are fish, meat and vegetarian options, pasta dishes, pizzas, sandwiches, salads, burgers and steaks.
We think we'd opt for the fried crispy salt and pepper squid with mango salsa to start - then we'd have to try the Asian steak sandwich with wasabi mayonnaise, Asian-style coleslaw and sweet potato fries. Then we think we'd finish off with the trio of desserts - white chocolate and raspberry pannacotta, lemon creme brulee and chocolate truffle torte.
Prices are reasonable too: there are starters from £5.25, mains from £9.45 and desserts from £5.95, and children have their own special menu. Dinner is served from 6pm to midnight.
Food is also available in the Upperdeck Bar, which is open from 11am to 1am - the menu's similar to the restaurant's, but with a wider range of sandwiches and snacks. There's also 24-hour room service.
Breakfast is served from 6am to 10.30am on weekdays - noon at weekends - and costs £15.95 per person for English breakfast, and £10.95 for continental. It's free for children under 16 if they're sharing your room.

Disabled Facilities

The hotel has 13 accessible rooms for disabled guests, and a ramp outside the entrance. It can also provide disabled guests with wheelchairs if they need them.

Transfer Information

You can book a taxi to the airport at reception - it'll cost about £10. The journey takes about six or seven minutes.
