Welsh Families Demand School Term Holiday Fine Be Refunded

Parents In Wales Fined For Taking Their Children Out Of School During Term Time Demand Their Money Back.

School Term Holiday FinesThe school fine system has caused uproar and hardship since it was first brought in by the Conservative government.

However, now it seems there could be light at the end of the tunnel after Welsh Education Minister Huw Lewis had said it was wrong to tell head teachers to ban all term-time leave.

Minister Backs Parents

Campaigners all over the UK have been calling for an end to the term-time fine system where parents are fined for taking their children out of school for a cheap holiday.

But even though David Cameron said during his last campaign to become Prime Minister he felt for parents, nothing was changed. But now, David Cameron could be forced to think again after Huw Lewis backed parents over the unfair fine system.

Unfair Ban Questioned

Huw Lewis, after a petition was put together by 2,000 people in Wales who called for an end to the fine system, wrote to councils to tell them it was wrong to tell head teachers to ban all term-time leave.

He said such a ban breached Welsh government regulations. The Education Secretary said pupils were allowed up to 10 days away at head teachers’ discretion, with leave “considered fairly and on its merits”.

That has now led to parents who were fined £60, calling for their money to be reimbursed.

Parents Ask For Money Back

Hundreds of parents who were fined in Wales have called on the government to hand back their money, but the Welsh government has said that it would be down to the individual councils to look into handing back the money.

Craig Langman, from the campaign group Parents Want A Say, said the minister had brought “common sense back to this whole policy”.

Since the news broke out that such a ban breached Welsh government regulations, parents in the UK are now hoping MPs will get together and force David Cameron to look at the fine system again and remove it.
